Wireless Mouse, USB, and Optical

Wireless mouseWelcome to Miracle-Mouse.com. This informational site is designed to offer education and technological details about buying computers, laptops and computer mouse devices of all types.

Inspired by laboratory mice, Douglas Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute invented the computer mouse in 1968. Bill English built the “ball mouse” in 1972 while working for Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center).
Computer mouse devices have come a long way since the 1970s and the technology continues to get even better. Optical mouse devices use LED and photodiodes to detect movement rather than moving parts on an X and Y axis. The most modern mouse devices are surface independent – meaning they don’t need a mouse pad to work – powerful image-processing chips make this possible. LED or a laser diode lights up the surface they track over.

Some use an infrared sensor instead of LED – it’s more efficient power-wise and can be more accurate. The old (90s) mechanical mouse devices had a tendency to get clogged up with lint and stop working until they got cleaned off. Mechanical versions were also more power-demanding, which only mattered if your laptop was running off battery power.
Optical mouse devices use LED (light emitting diode) and photodiodes to detect movement rather than moving some of its parts. Early optical mouse devices (circa 1980s) came in two types – one type utilized infrared LED and a 4-quadrant infrared sensor to detect grid lines printed with infrared absorbing ink on a special metallic surface. Predictive algorithms in the CPU of the mouse calculated the speed and direction over the grid. The other type utilized a 16-pixel visible-light image sensor with integrated motion detection on the same chip and tracked the motion of light dots in a dark field of a printed paper or similar mouse pad.

Suffice to say that most consumers don’t really care how it works – as long as it works. Some drawbacks to optical mouse devices include that they don’t track well on glossy or transparent surfaces. But an optical mouse will still outperform a mechanical mouse on slick, sticky or uneven surfaces. And definitely will outperform in any mobile application when you don’t have a mouse pad. However, multi-colored mouse pads might confuse optical mouse devices since movement is rendered based on an image illuminated by the LED.

Inertial and gyroscopic versions of mouse devices haven’t ever really proved popular. Though 3D pointer devices have become really popular as the Wii Remote, which is essentially a motion sensing device that detects spatial position by comparing the distance and position of the lights from the IR emitter using an integrated IR camera.
Some of the most important things a person can have for home and notebook computers include:

• Wireless mouse – Several different types of wireless mouse devices can be purchased. For example, a USB mouse is one of the types that have become more popular in the last five years or so. By hooking in a small device into the USB port, a mouse can be used wirelessly, though there is still a corded interface connected through wired serial buses.
An optical mouse is not quite as advanced as many USB mice, but it is more convenient than a typical rubber ball mouse. An optical mouse essentially uses infrared technology to see when the mouse is moving. This is how it knows how to move.

A Bluetooth mouse is another kind of mouse that can be used. It is similar to a USB mouse, however there are no devices that need to be plugged into USB ports. In order for this computer mouse to work properly, it must be used near a Bluetooth-enabled computer so its infrared signal can be read.

• Laptop battery – A good laptop battery is important to have.

• Laptop memory – A person who plans to play a lot of games or create a lot of design elements on a laptop may need to upgrade the amount of memory so all applications run smoothly. Almost any new laptop has more than enough memory for an occasional video or large software application, but if there are many applications, problems could occur.
